Story Line:

Mary sighed as she recalled her brother’s words before leaving the mansion in London. She’d pleaded with him to let her live a solitary life as a widow, not bothering anyone. In her mind, she did not need to take another husband if she already had everything she needed to survive. Pawning her off to the highest bidder was just another ploy of her brother to make some easy money.

Soft rain blanketed the moor as she stared out the window at the passing scenery. The journey from London to the Scottish Highlands had been lengthy and arduous. Mary used her delicate fingers to push back the long strands of blonde hair that had escaped her hat. Long plumes adorned the silky cap.

The wind picked up and whipped the loose strands of her hair about her fine features despite her best efforts. As frustrating as the wind was, she welcomed the cool dampness of the rain on her pale skin.

Mary Underwood was a tall girl with bright green eyes and golden-blonde hair, recently widowed from the Viscount of Warrington, an esteemed and wealthy gentleman from London society. She’d had everything she needed or could ever want in London, with the addition of everything she didn’t want in a cruel and abusive husband. She now found herself in the middle of Scotland, betrothed to a laird she’d never even met.

“Woah!” Mary heard the driver shout at the horses as she jolted in her seat. She had been so lost in her thoughts that she hadn’t even noticed the scenery changing as the carriage entered a tiny village.

There now The man called to the horses again in a thick Scottish accent as he jumped from his seat, making the carriage shake. “Here ye are lass,” he said as he opened the door to let her out.
